These images belong to an ongoing body of work "Prima Materia".
The phrase Prima Materia translates to Primal Matter. In alchemy it is the first matter, the starting material that is required for the creation of the philosopher’s stone. It is defined as a primitive formless base of all matter similar to chaos.
The main components and motivation in all of my work is the investigation of time, transformation and existence. These photographs once existed as portraits and still lives, the image from the Polaroid negative is submerged into a liquid chemical bath. Once the original photographic image has completely disappeared an abstract landscape emerges...the surface is soft and pliable. I can easily manipulate the surface of the film. The alteration and destruction of the film's structure allows it to resort back to organic shapes and materials found in nature.
