Bruno

This portrait series uses environment to shed new light on student athletes in the United States. The photographs abandon the velocity of action shots to explore the static presence of each athlete in the environment of their sport and training. This positioning — outside of their usual performative space — bypasses the few and far-between moments on the field to investigate how athletic identities are bound to and shaped by the apparatus/location of their training. The stilled poses also allow the subjects to drop their guard, coaxing out a far more nuanced landscape of emotion. The collection forms a typology of different sports — observing the variety of environments, attitudes, and body types present within the student athletic body. While the portraits contribute to an overall landscape with their formal qualities, they are also a representation of the uniqueness of each athlete. *Bruno is the mascot of Brown University
