Vintage Colonial explores the role of media in exposing the unseen and the retelling of history.
In this series, I’ve played up the distortions that occur when translating images from one generation of media to another in order to render the societal distortions of Apartheid era mid-century South Africa. Seemingly normal middle class family life of community and privilege is haunted by the shadows of its future and the impending turmoil of social and political change.
The South Africa in these images does not exist anymore, only in memories.
The process of creating these images involves the manipulation of media in a linear progression, starting with analog Super 8 home movies transferred to DVD and displayed on a large format LCD screen. The screen is photographed using a digital camera and printed onto paper as a semi-permanent representation of a moment in time. This result of this multi-generational process is a rendering of the unseen.
