Mourners Anonymous

Photographer Garry Clarkson spent one Saturday afternoon in July 2005 standing at the corner of Stockwell Tube station in London. The location, significant as it is the scene of one of the capital's worst examples of mistaken identity: the shooting by police of Jean Charles de Menezes on 22 July 2005, suspected of being a suicide bomber about to board a London Underground train. Jean Charles da Silva e de Menezes was a Brazilian man killed by officers of the London Metropolitan Police Service at Stockwell Station on the London Underground after he was deemed to be possibly one of the fugitives involved in the previous day's failed bombing attempts. These events took place two weeks after the London bombings of 7 July 2005, in which 52 people were murdered. It is usual to feel and show sadness because somebody has died. However, the people shown in these photographs are grieving 'by proxy' for the murder of a man seen only through memorials, newspaper clippings and memento images. These pictures are intended to portray evidence of the very tragedy for which the de Menezes have become unwitting yet powerful symbols. Their sense of injustice extends towards others who may have never known the victim or his family. These onlookers only confirm a silent exchange of glances. None posed; few knew they were being photographed. In this time of heightened security and paranoia, we are watched - always. A surveillance of nameless people, with their quiet faces, show solidarity for a death that is all the more poignant because the mementos they view could (by a simple twist of fate) so easily have been of the mourners themselves. Then, being looked at as the subjects of this anonymous grief. A sorrow felt beyond the particular, to the general.
