BEING A GIRL - The Archetypes Revisited
Storytelling is the mirror of our society, through storytelling we try to understand our lives and steer our collective path. The roles we find ourselves allotted in these stories can feel restrictive to the point of claustrophobic, so the push to reclaim control of one’s own story becomes imperative.
Women have typically found themselves filling unimaginative bit-parts in stories mostly told by men and have countered by redefining these roles to juicy character parts that serve their own ends.
“BEING A GIRL” is the product of an anarchic game of dress-up Sara and Hauge have been enjoying since 2009.
The concept behind the game is that of “the female chameleon” who takes control of an archetypal character starting with the costume and attitude, then gradually tweaks it in fantastic directions using a palate of historical reference, icons and stereotypes until she inhabits the character completely. The devil is, as usual, in the detail.
