Drawing on a documentary style of photographic representation that objectifies the subject, stripping the image of any external referents; “Self” is a series of portraits taken by the subjects themselves under the direction of the photographer.
The resulting tightly cropped images with expressionless faces and unflattering lighting were combined with elements of the photographer’s own face to create a series of portraits which, while largely representative of the subject, are “contaminated” by the photographer’s presence.
