Rwanda genocide survivors

These portraits were made in a refugee camp called Meheba, in Zambia, of Rwandan families, survivors of the Rwandan genocide that occurred in 1994. The central concept of the work was the act, The act of remembering and the act of giving, not taking. Altavista Collective traveled to this refugee camp from Brazil to produce family portraits for the survivors of genocide 20 years after the occurrence, and to print and give thesefamily portraits to the photographed families on the sight. It was the way to show that the world still remembers the tragedy of these families and the archivel printed portraits make it possible to remember the history of these families at least more 100 years on. We gave a lot of importance to portray these people as exceptionally strong individuals and families; survivors rather than victims as teh media normally does.
