I am a fine art photographer, using light and colour to create imagery that is evocative and stylised. I use daylight, torches or flash guns to bring to life the sketches that I have drawn inspired by fashion and beauty imagery. Bold colours, a full pictorial space and deep shadows are all characteristic of my work. After developing the concept myself, my process then opens up to include others. I value working in an intimate collaborative unit with my team, preferring a small number of models and make up artists, and incorporating those relationships into the image itself. I also prefer to create all sets and effects in real life, and do not often use digital compositing.
I am fascinated with how people use fashion and beauty to create and express their own understanding of self, an interest initially sparked by my study of art history and fashion editorial work. Through portraiture, nude studies and still life, I use photography to explore and demystify ‘beauty’, for others and for myself. These explorations provide an insight into the fundamental human emotions that lie beneath this basic feature of human society. I also love to play with medium and the tension between fine art portraiture and commercial photography, placing emphasis on the viewer to determine which is which, or even if such a distinction exists. I have exhibited in galleries such as Boomer Gallery in London, as well as PXP and Manifold Global International.
