“Volver a casa” [Returning home] is an immersive, compassionate coverage of the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, one of the deadliest and most destructive hurricanes in modern history, that captures the anguish and resilience of underreported communities in the island of Puerto Rico.
This long-term storytelling project chronicles Hurricane Maria’s aftermath, in particular my hometown: Maricao, western Puerto Rico. These intimate narratives and portraits are mainly characterized by a direct gaze and a sincere empathy and respect towards the subject from an insider’s perspective, since I also lived the disarray of finding my mother’s home for the last 40 years, the house where I grew up, completely destroyed.
