Skinheads, We Never Left is a project I have been working on for around 5 years, it all began in 2016 when I discovered the skinhead subculture while exploring alternative fashion photography. I quickly fell in love with the style and fashion of the culture which inspired my research into the subculture group where I discovered Its complex history. Skinheads over the years have been notoriously been labelled in the media as racist and fascist with the roots of the culture begin buried under negative press. Throughout my work my intention was to help to rectify these negative labels which skinheads have been branded with, by promoting the multicultural roots of the skinhead. Skinheads in the UK were originally formed on a culture fusion of post war British working class youth and Jamaican culture, fashion and music which arrived in the UK in the 50's and 60's. This fusion also lead to the birth of what we know today as Ska, Two Tone and British Reggae including The Specials, UB40, Madness, The Selector and many more. Within my project I have record hand written statements from my subjects to support my narrative and to give them a voice to express what it means to them to be a skinhead.
