I'm primarily a landscape photographer, but I also create black and white portraits. My goal in portraiture is to portray character as honestly as possible, to go beyond the capture into realms of thought, feeling, and spirit. Though not presented as a series in this competition, three of these portraits were part of a 50-portrait project to humanize addicted persons; the originals submitted here are in the permanent collection of the Hood Museum.
The one stylistic outlier in my submission is the passionate cellist. It's included because she is sensuous, intense, and in love with music.. It's an outlier because it used studio lighting; all the others used available light only.
