Grandparents are of central importance in the Italian extended family. They are carers as well as financial topper uppers, they are not disregarded and largely enormously valued by the grandchildren. The last year has shaken the base of these extended families, the relationship between grandparents and children has been forced to change. For some it has meant months of isolation far away from their sources of joy and comfort, for others months of difficulties of living in confined spaces with young children with uncontained energy. For all it has been a period of suffering. I set out to photograph some of these grandparent / grandchild reunions during a brief respite in the Italian lockdown in Naples, always in or around their homes.
