Home can mean many things: convenience, project, trophy, shelter, stronghold, lair, nursery, stage set, figment. Looking at homes from the outside, which is all one can normally do, is suggestive of what they mean to those who live inside. But it is hardly conclusive and sometimes altogether puzzling.
