The act of photographing is like holding an object at arm’s length to get a better view of it – a farsightedness one must contend with in order to more fully grasp meaning. My hometown of Wichita, Kansas is one such object. Foregrounding this metaphor, I look into the quotidian aspects of daily life to seek a deeper understanding of place, of where I live, and of the concept of home in general. Through my pictures and my exploration, by looking past what is immediately in front of me, by revisiting the same spots, I go beyond the places I was tethered to early in my life. I use the raw material of my local surroundings to reframe my view of photography itself. Close to Home is an attempt to formalize the relationship between my photography and my hometown, to find more of a foothold in both, and to explore the purposes and roles photography plays in relation to where one lives.
