In my hometown, by the river there is neighborhood which is made mostly of concrete and corrugated iron. Like the water in the river, the residents flow though it, calling it home for a short time and then moving on.
For the past year, I have photographed the residents and milieu of the Student Village. I hope to continue this personal long term documentary project after the corona related restrictions are lifted.
Student Village was constructed mainly in the 1970s and is the largest student housing complex in Finland with approximately 3500 residents. Most of the buildings are representatives of constructivism, an utilitarian architecture style. As photographer, I am interested in how the residents reflect their identities in this unpresuming environment. I am also intrigued by the contrast between the collective architecture and the individuality of the inhabitants.
I am also interested in the notion of temporary home. The residents of Student Village on average live two years in their apartments before moving on. These homes, therefore, are never permanent but places or temporary residence.
