As a stay-at-home father, my days are filled with noise and messes; constant movement and busy schedules; questions and chaos. I started taking photographs at night for practical reasons - that is when I have time on my own. What I found was the stillness and beauty of a landscape that has been temporarily abandoned. I started to notice the subtleties of light that can only occur at night in an urban environment.
For my series “Pollution of Night” I explore the light that illuminates the city at night, examining the interaction of different light types, color temperatures and intensities throughout light industrial areas of Portland, OR. This mixture of which contributes to the ‘glow’ of the city. Light pollution that we create in cities across the world is important for safeguarding people and property and allows for safer navigation of the cities at night. It also blocks out the night sky and further distances us from the natural world.
