In February 2016, politicians in Northern Ireland voted to keep a near total ban on abortion. Including pregnancies resulting from rape and those affected with fatal foetal anomalies, when the foetus will not survive outside of the womb. Around the same time, Gosnold and his wife were learning that the baby they were expecting was doomed to die. If the baby survived birth she would suffer excruciating pain until she stopped breathing.
'It Starts With Silence' explores the artist's relationship with a place in which politicians remain unwavering in their support for draconian and cruel laws. Gosnold makes accessible, through photographic work, one of the most tortuous experiences imaginable. Subject matter, which is private and deeply personal. Subject matter, which some consider taboo. Subject matter, which is absolutely deserving of insight.
