Als sich mir die Gelegenheit bot, als freischaffender Fotograf für Tageszeitungen zu arbeiten, nahm ich das Angebot an. Mit dem Geld, das ich jetzt verdiente, konnte ich endlich meine ersten eigenen Versuche in der Kunst starten. Gleichzeitig war ich begeistert von meiner neuen Aufgabe, mit dem Fotoapparat die Welt in Bildern einzufangen. Das Attentat der RAF auf den Vorstandsvorsitzenden der Deutschen Bank Alfred Herrhausen, Familie Schleyer als Opfer des RAF- Terrors oder der Fall der Berliner Mauer sind nur drei von vielen Arbeitsbeispielen aus dieser Zeit. 1987 fotografierte ich eine kurdische Familie in einer Flüchtlingsunterkunft in Deutschland. Mir war an diesem Tag nicht bewusst, dass dieses Foto der Anfang einer Fotoserie zum Thema Flucht und Migration sein wird. Und ich habe auch nicht ahnen können, dass die vielen Reisenotizen und Fotografien die im Verlauf von über 30 Jahren zu diesem Thema entstanden sind, Einfluss auf meine künstlerische Arbeit und Ausstellungstätigkeit haben werden. Das umfangreiche Material diverser Reisen, stiller Atelierarbeit und konzeptioneller Kunstausstellungen möchte ich jetzt in einem Buch zusammenfassen und mit diesem persönlichen Beitrag sowohl einen umfangreichen Überblick über die Situation an den Außengrenzen Europas aufzeigen als auch einen tiefen Einblick in meine künstlerische Arbeit im Rahmen dieses Langzeitprojektes ermöglichen. When the opportunity arose to work as a freelance photographer for daily newspapers, I accepted the offer. With the money I now earned, I was finally able to start my first own attempts at art. At the same time, I was excited about my new job of capturing the world in pictures with the camera. The attack by the RAF on the CEO of Deutsche Bank Alfred Herrhausen, the Schleyer family as victims of the RAF terror or the fall of the Berlin Wall are just three of many working examples from this period. In 1987 I photographed a Kurdish family in a refugee shelter in Germany. I was not aware that day that this photo would be the beginning of a photo series on the subject of flight and migration. And I could not have suspected that the travel notes and photos that I have been created on this topic over the course of more than 30 years will have an impact on my artistic work and exhibition activities. I would now like to summarize the extensive material from various trips, silent studio work and conceptual art exhibitions in a book and with this personal contribution give both a comprehensive overview of the situation on the external borders of Europe and a deep insight into my artistic work in the frame make this long-term project possible.
