This set of images is an excerpt from the project I worked on for a year at the International Center of Photography graduate program. At Once depicts my personal experience with the dissociative disorders Depersonalization and Derealization. For a long time, with great difficulty, I grappled with the duality of being both present and feeling lightyears away at the same time. But with years of personal processing, and eventually guidance, I learned that holding space for the tension of opposites actually catalyzes psychological growth into consciousness. This series as shown on the project website depicts my journey through this process, compiling years of personal writings, illustrations, and photographs to depict this experience in its non-linear form. I hope to ignite conversation about these under-discussed mental illnesses, and to encourage holding space for the many conflicting truths our realities contain so we can collectively grow into consciousness.
“...there is no energy unless there is a tension of opposites; hence it is necessary to discover the opposite to the attitude of the conscious mind.”
- Carl Jung
