Junkanoo is an important cultural event in The Bahamas that is celebrated every year across all of the family islands. Primary through high school students participate in their own Junior Junkanoo where they choose a theme, coordinate their own choreography, and create their costumes from scratch. Junkanoo celebrations often last all day into the night with parades marching down main thoroughfares. The origins of Junkanoo are mostly unknown, though it is believed to have originated from the days of slavery when loyalists began to inhabit the Bahamian islands with their slaves who were given three days off during the Christmas season to celebrate.
