This photo series is about impermanence. And humanity's ongoing struggle against impermanence. We live our lives now, active, busy with all kinds of things, career, family life, but eventually everything ends. We all live our lives in a kind of vicious circle of being born and dying again.
People have always resisted their mortality. Even now you see that fight against old age all around you. We try to preserve our beauty, if necessary by cosmetic surgery, we exercise to keep fit. By extension, you could say that my photographs are also about the fear of death.
Personally, I also fight against that fear. That might be the fear of a middle-aged woman who is becoming less and less visible, who will matter less and less. Her children are gone, she is not twenty anymore. Slowly she will disappear, fade away. Instead of being a participant, you become an observer, something I have tried to capture in the images I make.
It is a theme in which many women of my age will recognize themselves. At the same time it is also a personal story. I don't want to make it too dramatic: it is what it is. But I did find the inspiration for this photo series from that feeling.
I actually work very intuitively, playing a lot with light and movement. I look a lot at the way, in which classical painters use light and shadows and try to apply the same techniques to the photographs I make.
