I lived most of my life on the west coast, specifically in Los Angeles and I moved to Chicago in 2018. I find myself always comparing where I am now with where I was. I am most struck by the brick and masonry in Chicago thinking, these would not be up to code in earthquake prone Los Angeles and repairing and updating these old buildings would be too cost prohibitive for the speculative, booming growth of the strip-mall sprawl of SoCal.
Wide-eyed and enthusiastically, I talk to Chicagoans about all the beautiful brickwork and how stunning the stone relief carvings are above the thresholds of condominiums. I usually do not get much of a response at best someone mentions tuck pointing. The details I notice capture my imagination like some art history lecture describing the artistic technological advances through the evolution of cathedral door jambs. I see the scope of modern architecture chiseled, arranged and laid out from façade to façade: Second Empire, Neo Classical, Gothic Revival , Mediterranean Revival, Art deco, and Art Moderne. Surrounded by so many revelries I have created this series of works considering the impermanence of style and taste in the human mind.
