The beach is a photo-series on the seafront of Barcola in Trieste (Italy). For 4/5 months a year and at every hour of the day, what it looks like an ordinary porfido stone sidewalk is turned into the main city beach by groups of bathers armed with towels and beach cots.
The gulf of trieste is right behind my back as I catcht ordinary moments and gestures that are consumed in bathing settings. In Barcola, however, the urban space does not stop as it is approaching the sea but it blurs and merges with it in a daily summery ritual. I moved in Trieste 10 years ago and from the very beginning I was struck by the Triestin everyday life and by a personal sympathy towards the city dwellers who – with self indulgence and carelessness over the passers-by - spend the day on the seafront as if it was the backyard of their own houses.
