These images are of those I see that I find immediately arresting while walking around New York City. Sometimes certain people have a presence or a look that just invites exploration. Sometimes I am absolutely committed to making a portrait and this happens for reasons I don’t always entirely understand in the moment. Often I think about the person afterwards and realize consciously what I had only perceived subconsciously while photographing. Each individual has lived in New York City during the intensity of the Covid experience. One person passed away as an indirect result of lockdown and another lost his life post-lockdown. For me, the individuals in these images have a presence and subsequent narrative that I found to be compelling, forcing me to find ways to approach and effectively photograph strangers on the street. It’s my hope that the images somehow communicate a piece of what I felt and thought in the moments I had with each. It is a privilege for me to find people willing to trust me with their images, and the gift of their time and portraits are deeply affecting and meaningful to me.
