Panta Rei is an expression of the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who lived around 500 BC. It literally means: everything flows, everything is in motion.
With this he refers to the constant change of reality and writes: "You cannot descend into the same river twice, and you cannot touch a mortal substance twice in the same state; because of the impetuousness and the speed of change, it spreads and collects, comes and goes".
But it's not just about transformations due to the passage of time. The true meaning is based on the philosophical concept of 'becoming': without change nothing could exist, since 'becoming' itself is the essence of the cosmos, as opposed to 'being'.
Consolation
The process of degradation and decay gives space and breeding ground to new life. Every goodbye means not only leaving something behind, but also the beginning of something new. Panta Rei is therefore a source of hope, creativity and comfort.
The series
Central to this work are my two daughters; Feyoena of 15, who is still in the middle of puberty and Sanderijn, my big daughter who turned 18 this summer. The beginning of a life as an adult and a farewell to the child that she is no longer. Interspersed with poetic (nature) images in which I try to capture the symbolism and the feeling of change, I consider this transformation as a dance, in which farewell, melancholy and embracing life merge.
