Photography is a therapy for me, I like to create mostly in black and white, it's where I can really immerse myself and express myself.
I made this series of photographs in 2013 in an abandoned Soviet barracks in Hungary. The buildings had been demolished and new ones were being built on the site. During the shoot I focused on the windows and the light filtering through them, creating a contrast between darkness and light.
I'm always drawn to abandoned places, their melancholy, their charm as they slowly become the dead as a thousand destinies and stories are formed within their walls.
But in this case there was one more thing that struck me.
My grandfather had served in this barracks when he was young. When he was conscripted, he had to do his compulsory military service here. He had no choice but to go, away from his family.
It was a strange feeling to walk the same steps he had once trodden.....
