"The Music of Eastern Oregon" documents Eastern Oregon musicians through photographic portraits and interviews. In addition to asking/answering the question “Who are the musicians who call eastern Oregon home?”, this project investigates the personalities of the musicians and the music they make, while creating a musical ethnography of the region.
Specifically, this project will ask:
What is our rural sound? Does the region shape the creation of this music? What is it about the area that moves people to create music? How have the genres of the area evolved over time? Do folk, rock, psychedelic, or roots music sound different out here than in an urban area? Is the “where” important? To whom does this music matter?
The portraits make the ethnography visible. Through interviews and images, the music of Eastern Oregon comes to life, through images of artists, performances and performance spaces, creating a catalog of faces of the above- and underground.
