These images are part of a larger series I started shooting in late March 2020. It was the beginning of the pandemic. In South Australia borders were closed and we were about to be locked down in our houses. My plans to travel overseas for a year were no longer an option.
I took a shot of a street sign that read 'Refuge Island' which had black paint running down from the lettering. This is what I posted on social media at the time "Somewhat foreboding local street sign. Shot taken 19 March 2020. "If you need anything during these trying times just ask, I'll see what I can do. I'll continue posting my art, bold colours, music, my attempts at humour etc. and try to be some kind of refuge from the encompassing doom and gloom. Hoping your loved ones survive this and we're hugging again soon XO"
That post seemed to resonate with my friends and followers. Throughout the lockdown and beyond I kept posting shots and people kept encouraging me to do so. The series was planned to conclude at the end of 2020, when many of us thought the pandemic would be 'over'. How wrong we were. I'm now planning to finish it at the end of 2021.
