Charting the Afriscape of Leon County, Texas

Charting the Afriscape of Leon County, Texas is an autobiographical examination of my family history through documentary photography and the family archive. The ‘Home Place,’ the land my family has owned for generations, is the site of my creative practice. This land, imbued with the spiritual presence of my ancestors, bears witness to the comings and goings of its descendants. From family reunions, homecomings, funerals; the land is witness to it all. The camera serves as a device to explore African Diasporic cosmologies and Black people’s relationship to place, time, and the sacred. Night is no longer just the period of time in which the sun is below the horizon. For those who know, the time of night is spiritually active. This Afriscopic lens allows me to meditate on the Home Place as a Black landscape in rural Texas.
