ITHACA is a series of images created to help explore my journey through the British Class system and the identity issues I face due to social mobility. An imagined retrospective of the working class environments I once occupied, the project documents my middle-class daughter representing me at 11 years old. The project allowed me to bond, experience, and educate her on our vastly different upbringing.
Social mobility has left me in class purgatory, disconnected from the working-class communities of my youth whilst not being able to identify or consider myself middle-class. The title ITHACA comes from Homer's The Odyssey. The story focuses on Odysseus's arduous journey back to his home city of Ithaca, following his victory in the Trojan war. The journey is full of temptation, sacrifice and self-doubt. I, too, left home to fight a war; this series looks to capture my journey back to where I belong.
