With the majority of the Canadian population belonging to the middle or upper classes, much time and energy are devoted to a luxurious problem: deciding how to spend one’s discretionary income, the money that is left after all essential expenses have been paid.
"Discretionary Income" deals with issues of materialism, social class, vernacular culture, comfort and taste. The photographs document people’s pursuit of their material desires as well as their interest in decoration, fashion and leisure. "Discretionary Income" looks at subject matter rather common to anyone belonging to the Canadian middle class.
The photographs in this body of work were made over a period of one and a half years at the various public trade shows that come annually to Quebec City, Montreal and Laval in Canada.
