When I first photographed in Roxbury and Dorchester my idea was to capture the effect crime and violence has on these inner city neighborhoods. Stories in the news about gang shootings and drug busts provoked my curiosity to see what crime does to these neighborhoods. It didn't take long for me to realize how social issues have a profound effect on the neighborhoods, but don't define them. The communities have a distinguishing connection to land, culture, and history. Culture cannot be defined by one singular entity. The landscape of Roxbury and Dorchester offer a glimpse into the diverse cultures that call the neighborhoods home. Change has an immense role in establishing these communities. It is inevitable that over time these neighborhoods will continue to change.
