The genesis for the series, “Winter clings to parts of us,” was the act of spreading my father’s ashes on the farm he lived on prior to his death. Interest in the land and the physical act of throwing or spreading is explored in relation to the transformative power of the photographic negative. A photograph is a surface, it is not a memory but it is a gateway to memories and thus occupies a duality of meaning, at once banal and poetic. The land is also a surface but it is a landscape saturated with symbolism. Each image takes on the task of exploration in a unique way. The transformation could be simply showing something in grayscale or complex and reliant on chance. Each color negative has been stained by materials that were thrown, dropped or spread onto the film’s surface prior to printing, simultaneously engaging the factual and sublime.
