This is a self-assigned project that I shot earlier this year, and then the NY Times decide to publish it.
Feeling very constricted (like most people) during the height of the pandemic, and living in Mexico, I deiced to to create a series of 19 (Covid-19!) portraits of neighbours and friends, each wearing a mask that is supposed to be representative of Mexican culture, in a somewhat surreal fashion. I used a day light studio that I have in my house and tried to maintain social distancing and wherever possible tried to show a connection between the "mask" and something that that I felt represented that particular person in some way, either by their profession, beliefs or something I happened to know about them.
Gracias!
