The fall of the Berlin Wall (Mauerfall) on 9 November 1989 was a pivotal event in world history which marked the falling of the Iron Curtain and one of the series of events that started the fall of communism in Eastern and Central Europe.
The Berlin Wall documentary project was photographed in the Summer of 1989 when the first East Germans circumvented border controls and began streaming west through border loop holes as the vast former Soviet Europe began to crumble. The Berlin Wall, a 155 kilometre , heavy guarded , concrete barrier snaked through the middle of Berlin dividing East from West grew into an extended visual commentary on the divided nation of Germany caught up in the ultimate ideological and geopolitical battle of the 20th century. From its western side in the enclave of West Berlin it symbolized the freedoms of Western society , it was a magnet for freedom advocates , artists, graffiti artists, and became an outdoor gallery of painted panels and graffiti . That Summer the redundancy of the Berlin Wall seemed imminent so this project's aim was to create a lasting photographic documentary of this historic wall and some of its art works , as they were when the Berlin Wall fell and was torn down in November 1989.
