Halftone movies, like standard videos or films, are made up of a sequence of still images that the viewer sees as movement in time. Unlike standard videos, this movement starts as changes to a fixed halftone matrix and is seen in deformations of the dots. The movement in the original scene has one tempo, while the variations in the structure of the movie have a different, much slower tempo. Seeing the underlying movement requires some involvement and effort from the viewer. The sound track is normally unmodified from the initial recording and provides a bridge back to the original scene.
These halftone movies are relatively short (3 to 4 minutes is typical, the referenced extracts are even shorter) and should be seen in an installation where the viewers are free to come and go as they please. They are not meant to be shown in a theatrical setting so they do not contain title and credits, information that should be displayed separately.
My goal is for the viewer to be able to inhabit the pieces. The relationship of image scale to the size of venue and the viewers' ability to approach the image are key. Projection is normally the best option. Multiple movies can be shown together simultaneously or sequentially.
