I have been interested, throughout my career, in how combining a photograph with an external element (such as a text) or with another photograph, can affect the viewer’s perception and understanding of each photograph. The pairing can help clarify what interests the photographer in a particular image, as various visual elements are mirrored (or not), echoed, enhanced, opposed or contradicted. I have done many series of paired (or juxtaposed) images; for this series, I selected photographs that are essentially “flat” (that is, with little depth illusion) so that the slight “perturbations” of that flatness would be enhanced and so that the photos could work formally in pairings with no separation between them. In this series (of twenty pairs in total) each pairing has a unique logic - whether based in color, pattern, texture, linear vector, symbolic elements, depicted subject matter, etc.
