Mei-Lien, my wife, who was born in Hong Kong, and I both were on the faculties at universities in Hong Kong and guest lectured at other universities in China. Prestigious positions by most accounts but I didn't want to move there, we had a good life in New York City with our two daughters. I resented moving to China. But, over time, however, walking almost every street of Hong Kong with my camera the few years we spent there, I got used to the sights, and cacaphony, and mass of humanity, the steaming humidity, and the smell of things--the foreignness of the place. This project is an apology of sorts. When she passed on, too young, a few short years after arrived, I felt lost but photography helped me see what that place meant to her--home. These are images she never had a chance to see, this is a love letter.
