"I have to do something against the feelings of anger, outrage and powerlessness!" These were my thoughts in the days after Russia started the war against Ukraine. On February 27, 2022 I packed my bags, jumped on my motorbike and left Berlin.
First I went to the German-Polish border, then on to the Ukrainian border along which I travelled for several weeks. I met people fleeing from violence and war, encountered innumerable volunteers and experienced great solidarity and humanity. I also kept questioning my own role, wondered what borders mean and how we behave during this and other crises.
Aside from it being an emotional journey, I was in search of motives that captured this crisis differently. I aimed to take quiet and subtle rather than obvious and sensational photos. In contrast to daily news photography, I was looking to tell the story of this moment in time at a slower pace.
