In the face of conflict, interiorizing opposing forces can initiate a form of trauma. Repercussions from this experience can include feelings of loss, alienation, and meaninglessness. As a result, conflict can initiate a re-examination of foundations after various usual points of reference are eliminated and no longer seem reliable. In the midst of the soul storm, there's a longing for authentic expression and, ultimately, for new possibilities of meaning.
With family roots in Eastern Europe, the onset of the recent conflict in Ukraine has shaken me deeply. Through the use of multiple exposure, montage, and camera movement, these images explore some of these repercussions as interior and metaphorical realities. This series disassembles and reassembles strange dystopian environments where familiar shapes become unfamiliar, where stairs, windows or portals lead to the unknown, where colours can represent threats or desires.
