Earth Calls

Earth Calls series I was born in a country that no longer exists. Displaced from Yugoslavia in 1991, my life and art practice shifted to a nomadic journey throughout the United States. My creative inquiry is centered around the intricacy of social notions of belonging to "home". At each locale, I employ my sense of place, making ephemeral, environmental installations, they are in situ interventions that continue to narrate via lyrical images. ​​Only focus and exposure determine their outcome. I was stranded by the pandemic in 2020 on a rare visit to my ancestral mountaintop land in Serbia. Since I’ve stayed alone in a dilapidated vernacular dwelling without electricity and running water generating the ongoing Earth Calls series. My materials are indigenous, prewar staple species such as wheat, wool, wild medicinal plants, and water. Serbia is a postwar social conundrum with an unhealthy economy and detrimental environmental policies, a leading Black Ecological Spot of Europe. Still pristine, this mountainous land is potently beautiful andfertile, with a disappearing sustainable heritage. There is a great diversity of species set in the beauty of a natural vastness. Through Earth Calls I intend to illuminate a vision of sustainably integrated coexistence with the natural environment.
