But as soon as I sit down for example in a tram (as its speed can’t be accelerated) all that remains is to relax. And suddenly no one around is in a hurry. Moreover everybody around already seems to be where they want to be. Almost. It was raining outside in the city streets, it was autumn, it was wet and chilly. Figures outside huddled under awnings or rushed to cross open spaces as quickly as was possible. Almost none of the passengers looked out the window, but misted glass was cleaned around everyone. These spots were like a halo of saints. The trams were stuck in a traffic jam, but hardly anyone cared. For me, a non-religious person, it was the most spiritual experience in a long time. There was something sublime in watching peaceful people in no hurry, who do nothing, who felt good for no apparent reason. Each of the passengers was in his own personal space among others, but separately from those around and from the space around them all. What would happen if the tram gets stuck in a traffic jam for another half an hour? Would they notice and go outside? ...But thinking I stood still and froze. It was time to go home.
