Eggs, Havana, Cuba 2015

There photos were taken in Havana, Cuba in 2015. I started noticing people walking around with these large trays of eggs and decided to make a small series on it. Cuba has a food ration system where the government will distribute certain subsidized goods periodically. Each individual has a "Supplies Notebook" which keeps track of the rations that each person is entitled to. The rations not only include food but also other items such as fuel, matches, and cigarettes. The rations are meant to provide a minimum amount of supplies for living. Cubans can still make money through other means and buy products on the open market. The subsidies are an expensive program for the government. Cuba still has a centrally planned economy with strict capital controls on its currency. With the recent developments causing soaring food and fuel prices around the world, this will only increase the burden on the government and make the lives of ordinary Cubans more difficult.
