Public Sleeping

Sleeping is a private act, often seen in public places. The sleepers are vulnerable but must feel confident that they are safe. The man on the step in Arles awoke and saw me with my camera. He was very angry that I had made this picture. None of the subjects in the rest of the series were aware of my presence before, during, or after I photographed them. I have additional images of public sleepers in Japan, Italy, and Brazil.
