I don't like change especially when I think that it is unnecessary. I hoped that it wouldn't Haden for months or even years but when I saw that work had already started at the end of my block, my thoughts went to my street-side garden. My husband and I dug and removed plants along with edge of the sidewalk. As the operation approached my end of the block, I began to photograph the men and machines. Their apprehension softened into amusement while my annoyance turned into fascination and appreciation. the removal of the heavy slobs of the old sidewalk was carried out with great dexterity while the spreading and soothing of the wet cent into the forms for the new sidewalk reminded me of a carefully choreographed dance - no false starts, no wasted efforts. When I examined the images which I had captured over the course of four days, I recognized that walking in wet cement is a good metaphor of the process of creating art or anything original; a sense of stuckness miraculously gives way to transformation.
