“The Metropolis” is a series of photographs depicting the industrial cities of the Upper Silesian Agglomeration.
Carried out in the years 2004-2016, the project is primarily focused on old districts and former workers’ housing estates.
Following the collapse of the old-fashioned industry in Upper Silesia, the demolition of old steelworks and the liquidation of unprofitable mines, these districts have been neglected or devastated, thereby rendering many residents unemployed.
However, it is also possible to discern traces of small business activities here, with small shops and service outlets coming into existence. These include a hair salon, a pawnshop and a second-hand clothes outlet. Such small shops often go bankrupt, but new ones appear in their place.
Old districts and former workers’ housing estates are currently undergoing significant modifications, including demolition and renovation works. As a result, old streets and backyards are disappearing, paving the way for new districts, banks and large shopping centres. And life goes on.
