History. Pain. Dust.
series of photographs / slideshow installation
2022
The building was designed by architect Cezar Lăzărescu (1923-1986) in 1967 as an annex to the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party, where party conferences were originally held. Over the last 30 years, the Sala Omnia has housed the Romanian Senate and the Ion Dacian National Operetta Theatre.
I first entered at Sala Omnia invited by an artistic duo from Graz, interested to involve artists to react to this building and contribute to the collaborative project Omission possible (https://mutualloop.at/saitlife-ontheroadagain).
Even in abandoned shape you can still manage to have an idea about how the place was in the 70s and 80s. You can identify elements of architecture and design of folkloric inspiration, beautiful crafted and produced with very good materials. All covered in a heavy layer of dust.
My reaction was to fill up a suitcase with clothes which reminded me of the 80s and the of the ideological/political context. I placed my camera on my tripod and I tried to imagine women coming into this building. Who were they? I was thinking at secretaries working for the men in power, even women coming here trying to solve difficult situations for their husbands and families.
The series of performative photographs I have done are reaction to the history of the building and political context overlapping the unknown micro-[her]stories of the trauma and abuse.
