SODADE

It is hardly the beauty of nature that attracts a phographer to come to Cape Verde, it is rather its people, the Cape Verdeans. Their amicableness, openness and vitality wins you easily and makes you come to the islands repeatedly. Their music and dance reflect best the whole scope of emotional interplay from sadness and despair to joy and frolic. Music is their expression of SODADE, the never ending nostalgic longing for love, for frienship, for their home. Sodade pervades their lives, whether they are at home or displaced around the world. These photographs were taken between 1997 and 2005 during my repeated travers to the islands.
