An ongoing project of images documenting youth culture and fashion based on the Skateboard community in Britain today.
My subjects are chosen for their aesthetics and style which for most young people is so important for them to express their different personalities through fashion and their 'look' .
Photographing the skaters with a 50 year old wooden 4x5 view camera on location with a white background produces a more considered portrait as the subject has to be patient with the mechanics of the process and the set up of making one negative. A relationship is made during the whole process and I hope to capture the personality and style of the subject.
One of the elements of the skateboarding culture is that it is welcoming to anyone that approaches it with the intention of improving his or her personal skill. Class, race, gender are irrelevant provided that the person's enthusiasm for the actual art of skateboarding is genuine. In this way, skateboarding is egalitarian and inclusive.
