Nowadays, in the age of Corona, the words positive-negative take on a different dimension and meaning.
It is actually positive to be negative.
During the second lockdown in Berlin in January 2021, I found myself in my photo lab.
Social distancing in the dark. There it's best to work alone anyway.
During the pandemic, all citizens worldwide avoid social contact.
The obvious thing to do.., to hole up.
Not to lament, but to realise or process what was happening or to work on it.
So the idea was born to make prints using used common FFP2 and surgical masks that we all wear at the moment.
I use the different layers of fleece as negatives in my enlarger, working with both classic photographic paper and direct positive paper - not just to take the pun further.
The unique pieces look like microscopic originals that make you think you can see traces of your breath. Traces of breath.
I have cut up various used masks and placed the individual layers of fleece instead of negatives in the negative stage of my enlarger and printed them with normal photographic paper, but also with direct positive paper.
I made prints in different sizes.
It is astonishing how different the results appear.
So they are not photograms, but basically simple prints.
